Low-spoons Google Sites guide

You have your embed code. Here are the clicks.

You do not need to understand the code. Do one numbered step, look for the check at the end and then move on.

The whole route: Blank site → name it → Insert → Embed → Embed code → paste → Next → Insert → resize → Preview → Publish

Step 1 of 7

Open Google Sites and choose Blank site.

Go to sites.google.com. Under Start a new site, choose Blank.

You are done when: a new empty site opens in the editor.

Step 2 of 7

Name the site and the page.

At the top left, replace Untitled site with a useful file name. On the page itself, replace Your page title with the title pupils will see.

You are done when: the same clear resource name appears in both places.

Two names The top-left name is for you. The large page title is for pupils.

Step 3 of 7

Choose Insert, then Embed.

Look at the panel on the right. Select the Insert tab, then select Embed.

You are done when: a box called Embed from the web appears.

Step 4 of 7

Choose Embed code and paste.

Select the Embed code tab. Click inside the large code box and paste the complete code. Then select Next.

If you only see part of your code: do not trim it. The box scrolls.

You are done when: Google shows a preview of the resource.

Two clicks Embed code, then Next.

Step 5 of 7

Check the preview, then choose Insert.

The small preview may look cramped. That is normal. If the resource appears, select Insert.

If the preview is blank or shows an error: stop here. Go back and check that the complete code was copied.

You are done when: the resource appears as a box on your page.

Do not perfect it here If the resource appears, choose Insert.

Step 6 of 7

Make the embed wide and tall enough.

Click the embedded resource. Drag the blue handles until the full width is used and the important controls are visible without a tiny inner window.

Then select Preview at the top and check the desktop, tablet and phone views.

You are done when: pupils can read the instructions and reach the buttons without the resource feeling squeezed.

Step 7 of 7

Choose the approved audience and publish.

Select Publish. Choose a sensible web address if Google asks for one. For Who can view my site, use the audience approved by your school.

School accounts vary. You may see your school or organisation as an option. If the right audience is missing, stop and ask your IT or data-protection lead. Do not make pupil material public just to get past the screen.

You are done when: the published link opens for the intended viewers and the resource works there.

Pause here Choose the approved audience before you select Publish.

Final two-minute check

Open the published page as a pupil would.

The editor preview is not the final test. Use the published link and check the real page.

Check the resource

  • Instructions and buttons are visible
  • Answers, feedback and reset controls work
  • The page is usable on a Chromebook-sized screen
  • Printing or the fallback route works

Check the audience

  • The intended school viewers can open it
  • People outside that audience cannot open it
  • No pupil names or private information appear
  • The resource still works through school filtering

That is enough. You have turned finished embed code into a working Google Site. You can improve the decoration later, or leave it simple.

Interface labels checked against Google’s embed guidance and Google’s publishing guidance. School-managed accounts may show different audience choices.
